James Clausel (12-31-11) service 1-3-12

James Clausel

James L. Clausel, 82, of Savannah, died Saturday, Dec. 31, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

He was born in Olive Hill community, the son of the late James Daniel (Danny) and Lou Nettie Steward Clausel. He was united in marriage to Gladys Baugus, who survives.

Mr. Clausel enlisted in the Army and was stationed at Fort Campbell. His discharge from the Army led to his employment with the Tennessee Valley Electric Cooperative as a lineman. He later taught lineman classes and eventually, James L. was promoted to the position of superintendent–a position he held until his retirement. He was an active member of the Savannah Church of Christ where he often led singing during the worship services. He loved bluegrass music and played in bands for community events such as Country Christmas, at nursing homes for the enjoyment of the residents, and at benefits for those people who found themselves in financial difficulties.

Services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Jim Chamblee officiating. Burial followed in the Memory Gardens at Savannah.

In addition to his wife, Gladys, he is survived by a daughter, Janice Gail Smith of Savannah; two sons, James Edward of Savannah and Steven Thomas Clausel of Witchita, Kan.; three sisters, Juanita Wolfe of Erin, Tenn., and Nettie Sue Hughes and Betty Lou Blount, both of Savannah; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by four sisters, an infant who died at birth, Magdalene Clausel Hardin, Estelle Gillespie Tucker and Mildred Dickson; and two brothers, James Edward and Harrison Odell Clausel.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or LeBonheur Children’s Hospital.
