James Alfred Neill was born in Savannah on Oct. 19, 1931, the son of the late James Thomas and Georgia Alice Shelton Beckham Neill.
On Aug. 18, 1951, he was united in marriage to Sally D. Reynolds, who preceded her husband in death on Aug. 6, 2013.
Mr. Neill owned and operated Neill’s Sawmill from 1978 until 2004. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and a member of Turkey Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Neill loved working with his mules and playing bluegrass music.
He departed this life on Monday, Oct. 2, in Savannah at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 13 days.
Mr. Neill is survived by his children, Carolyn Sherrod and her husband Dennis of Cedar Grove, Tennessee, Terry Neill and his wife Patricia of Savannah and Thomas Neill and his wife Julie of Savannah; five grandchildren, Northern Hendricks, Sara Holcomb, Kaydee Neill, Shelton Neill and Caleb Neill; two great-grandchildren, Jackson Hendricks and Noah Holcomb; and two sisters, Esther Godwin and Adeline Casteel.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, H.B. Beckham.
Services were held on Thursday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m., at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Bobby McCord and Wade Holbrook officiating. Burial followed in Neill Cemetery at Savannah.
