AHS and HCHS square off in baseball and softball action

The Hardin County Baseball Tigers welcomed Adamsville to Savannah City Park Tuesday, March 10 for Game Two of a River City Classic doubleheader.

Neither squad was able to score in the first inning and one half with Heath Hardin picking up a single for the only hit during that time frame.
Tiger Caden Battles led off the bottom of the second and advanced to third base on a couple of ground outs. Keaton Davis reached on an error as Battles raced across the plate with the first tally of the rivalry game. Davis advanced to second, then third, before scoring on an RBI single off the bat of Heath Hardin.
Hayes Malone stepped up to the plate and soon singled on a hard ground ball to left field. Maddox Ruddle then drew a walk to load the bases with Tigers. Another run scored when Gavin Cromwell drew a four-pitch walk and the final two runs of the rally dashed home when Brilee Ritter laced a sharp line drive to left field.
Caysen Hunt led off for the Cards in the top of the third and reached base on an errant Tiger throw which resulted in an error. Hunt advanced to second base on a wild pitch and raced to third when Owen Teague drilled a single into center field. J.C. Gray stepped up and lined a double into center to score Hunt. Schaffer Wilmeth was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Teague soon scored on a wild pitch before another Tiger error allowed Gray to score run number three. Maguire Luna smacked an RBI single into center field to score Wilmeth as the Cards put four runs on the board to make the new score 5-4 heading to the bottom of the third.
Jett Littlefield led off with a single for HCHS and advanced to second base on a bunt by Matthew White. With two out, Littlefield came around to score on a line drive RBI single off the bat of Heath Hardin. Hayes Malone kept the rally going with a ringing double before Maddox Ruddle was struck by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman Gavin Cromwell then doubled into right field to plate two Tiger runs as Ruddle raced to third. Ruddle soon scored on a wild pitch to make the new score 9-4 as the rally ended and the Cards came in to bat in the top of the fourth.
Both sides were set down in order in the fourth inning as lightning began to flash in the distance and small drops of rain began to fall out of the sky.
Cardinal Isaac Howard lined a single to left with one out in the top of the fifth frame. Hardin County pitcher Tyler Screws was able to induce a ground ball hit to HC third baseman Jett Littlefield who fired the ball to second baseman Matthew White who made the turn and zinged the throw to first baseman Brilee Ritter to complete a 5-4-3 Tiger double play.
Tiger Keaton Davis lined out leading off the top of the fifth as the rain coming down and the lightning flashes forced a 30 minute delay. With the time getting late and the possibility of a lengthy delay, the decision was made to call the game complete as HC won by a 9-4 margin.
Tiger Matthew White started on the hill for HCHS and went 2-2/3 innings to earn the victory, allowing 0 earned runs on three hits with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks. Southpaw Tyler Screws came on in relief and did a great job to pick up the save, giving up 1 hit and striking out 1 with 1 walk over 2-1/3 innings.
Cardinal Maguire Luna started on the mound and went three innings as Eli Ashe came in to pitch the final 1-1/3 frames.
The Adamsville Lady Cardinals played host to the Hardin County Lady Tigers Friday, March 13 for the second of two rivalry games between the two schools last week with this one on the AHS Softball field.

Hardin County was retired in order in the top of the first inning to bring Adamsville to the plate.
Baya Bromley reached with one out on a pop-fly double and advanced to third base on an error. Lady Cardinal Hayley Beth Brewer lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Bromley as AHS took a 1-0 lead to the second inning.
HC picked up a base runner when Kate Stricklin was hit by a pitch. Stricklin advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Addison Fondren but would go no further. The Lady Cards failed to score in the bottom of the inning to send the game into the third frame.
HC Freshman Rylee Qualls picked up the first HCHS hit when she doubled with two out but was stranded there.
AHS was retired three-up and three-down to quickly send the contest to the fourth.
Kate Stricklin doubled to left field with one out before a walk was drawn by Jaylee Osteen but the threat ended right there.
Brewer led off the bottom of the frame by reaching on an error with Grace Belton following with a pop-fly single. Makenzie Luna put down a bunt single to load the bases. Hayley Sims then lined a single to left field to score one run before Sophie Edwards reached on an error to allow Belton to cross the plate. Mollie Grayce Moore brought Luna home with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 4-0. Layla Howard put down a bunt to sacrifice the runners to second and third base. Sims scored the final AHS tally of the inning when Baylee Brown grounded into a fielder’s choice as Adamsville led 5-0 after four innings.
HC was retired in order in the fifth with a single by Luna the lone base runner for the Lady Cardinals.
The Lady Tigers were quickly retired on three ground ball outs in the top of the sixth.
Lady Cardinal Sophie Edwards lined a single to left leading off the bottom of the frame before Moore walked. Two outs later Baya Bromley laced a double into left field to plate the final two runs of the game for the home team.
HCHS was retired in order in the top of the seventh to end the rivalry contest.
AHS hurler Hayley Beth Brewer pitched all seven innings in earning the win, allowing 0 runs on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
HCHS pitcher Lexie Williams also pitched a complete game, giving up two earned runs over six frames on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Hardin County was hurt by four fielding errors.
