Spend an evening enjoying a free performance of the Germantown Symphony Orchestra on Saturday in downtown Savannah.
The Savannah Arts Commission and the city of Savannah continue the 35 year tradition of hosting the annual Sunset Symphony on the front lawn of the historic Cherry Mansion, which starts at 5:30 p.m.
“Bring your chairs or blankets and come enjoy a concert with selections of classical and popular tunes at this family-friendly event,” said Hardin County Tourism Director Beth Pippin.
This year’s concert theme is “Jazz it Up!” and features “iconic selections from Duke Ellington, Scott Joplin, Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, and George Gershwin, just to drop a few names,” Pippin revealed.
The Germantown Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Ronald Vernon, has a long history of working to provide excellent concert-going experiences for its audiences and members, promote young artists and serve the community.
It’s a volunteer, self-governing and community-based orchestra, engaging more than 80 musicians.
The musicians are a diverse group of students, teachers, professional musicians, other professionals, and retirees.
Donations are being accepted for this free performance made possible through the efforts of the city, the Savannah Arts Commission and donations from local businesses and individuals.
Donations can be made to SAC, P.O. Box 1465, Savannah, TN, 38372. Anyone interested in learning about patron benefits can call the Savannah Arts Commission at 731-925-8181.
Cherry Mansion is at 265 Main St., overlooking the Tennessee River. It was the site of Union Gen. U.S. Grant’s headquarters during the Battle of Shiloh.
Unfavorable weather will move the concert to the Hardin County High School auditorium at 1170 Pickwick St. in Savannah.
