Car stranded in flood water, Coffee Landing Road still closed Thursday

A car stuck on flooded Coffee Landing Road on Monday afternoon

The Hardin County Fire Department responded to a vehicle trapped in flood waters on Coffee Landing Road off the U.S. 64 levee between Savannah and Crump on Monday, March 6.

At approximately 4:15 p.m., fire personnel arrived at the scene to find that the four occupants of the vehicle, two adults and two children, had safely exited the flooded vehicle.

County Fire Chief Melvin Martin said the driver accidentally drove into a ditch that was filled with about a foot of water, enabling the occupants to walk away from the vehicle to dry land. He said it will be the driver’s responsibility to remove the vehicle from the site when it is safe to do so.

“The driver was local and said he only proceeded to continue to drive past the ‘Road Closed’ sign after another driver told them it was safe to cross any water covering Coffee Landing Road,” Martin said.

Thursday, Coffee Landing Road is still closed and the Tennessee River at Savannah remains in minor flood stage. County emergency officials urge drivers to heed any road closure signs and remind drivers to “Turn around, don’t drown.”
