Fire destroys hotel construction in Savannah

Posted

Savannah’s Fire Department reports that at 4:48 a.m. this morning their personnel were dispatched to 125 Million Dollar Way in Savannah for a reported structured fire involving the Sleep Inn currently under construction by the Hunt Contracting-Design company.
The department’s Engine 1 was on the scene within five minutes of the notification and upon arrival, heavy flame and smoke were observed from the exterior of the building.
Firefighters started to battle the battle, but according to the report issued by Savannah’s Fire Chief Steve Hughes, it was determined an offensive attack was not practical or safe for the firefighters on scene due to the amount of the flame and heat.
The department’s command decided to begin defensive attack procedures to save the surrounding equipment, environment, and personal property, including a nearby occupied home.
Within minutes of the Savannah firefighters arrival, Hardin County firefighters arrived to assist with fighting the fire.
Hughes report states that due to the incomplete construction of the building, coupled with environmental factors including west winds feeding through the open floors, the structure was quickly engulfed in flames and a total loss. The neighboring home also sustained minor damage to personal property.
Hughes reports that at this time the cause and origin of the fire have not been determined.
Due to the monetary value of the structure, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Fire Division was requested to assist with the investigation.
Hughes report states that at this time, it is not believed, nor should it be assumed, the cause of the fire is “nefarious in nature.”
Hughes said he wants to caution the public from making assumptions and reminds everyone to let the investigation lead the department to the cause of the fire.
He also said, “I want to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers and kind words for all of the emergency responders who assisted in this call. While tragic, we are glad that no one was injured battling this intense blaze. I want to especially thank the Hardin County Fire Department for their assistance.”
The Hardin County Fire Department reported on their Facebook page that the fire was under control at 7:07 a.m., but the site will be monitored throughout the day.
