Flu season: Number of sick students relatively low

Due to questions regarding nearby school systems closing because of large numbers of sick students, Hardin County Director of Schools Michael Davis noted Thursday that schools here have so far avoided rampant absenteeism.

“We are tracking our absentee rate daily now and until we get through the flu season,” Davis said. “Our policy is to be at least at 15 percent of students absent before canceling school is even considered.”

Currently, 60 Hardin County High School students, 56 Middle School, 67 Parris South Elementary, 46 Northside Elementary, 16 East Elementary, 27 West Hardin Elementary, and 10 Pickwick Southside School students are listed as absent.

A total of 283 students are absent today, for a system-wide absentee rate of 8.6 percent.
