Doris Brown Sawner, 92, of Tempe, Arizona, passed away on Saturday, March 21. She was born on August 9, 1933, in Germantown, Tennessee, the beloved daughter of William and Grace Brown.
Doris was a life-long learner. After high school graduation, she continued her studies at Memphis State College (now University of Memphis) and University of Tennessee -Knoxville. She met her husband of 65 years, Tom, at a Memphis State ROTC dance.
After their marriage, she put her education on hold to begin their family, and support Tom in his Air Force and later corporate careers. Doris later returned to school and completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Northern Illinois University.
Doris loved camping and canoeing, and found peace and joy in the outdoors. She was a Girl Scout throughout her life, serving her community with passion, rising from Scout, Camp Counselor, and Troop Leader, to a National Trainer and eventually a National Board Member of Girl Scouts USA.
The rock of her family, Doris dedicated her life to those she loved. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Natalie Jeanette Robertson (Robert), William Jeffery Sawner (Catherine) and Sandra Elizabeth Kowalski (Bill).
Her legacy continues through her grandchildren and their spouses; Ann Marie Sawner; Thomas Jefferson “TJ” Sawner (Paul), Christopher Robertson (Stephanie), Timothy Robertson (Bailey), Jordyn Kowalski Arntsen (Lars), Haley Kowalski, and Kara Kowalski. She was also the proud great-grandmother of Owen, Liam, and Ryan Robertson, as well as Kasper, Maja, and Frida Arntsen.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas Edgar Sawner Jr.; and her beloved son, Thomas Edgar Sawner III.
A service to celebrate Doris’s life will be held on Friday, May 8, 3 p.m., at Tempe Mortuary, 405 E.Southern Ave, Tempe, AZ. A reception will follow at her home. Directions provided at time of Service.
