Free Sunset Symphony returning to Cherry Mansion

UPDATE, SEPT. 3 -- The concert has been moved to Hardin County High School because of the possibility of wet weather.

INITIAL STORY, SEPT. 1 -- Savannah’s popular and free Sunset Symphony event is returning Saturday after being canceled the last two years because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 33-year tradition continues on the lawn of historic Cherry Mansion overlooking the Tennessee River in Savannah as the Savannah Arts Commission hosts the Germantown Symphony Orchestra.

Under the direction of Dr. Ronald Vernon, the concert begins at 5:30 p.m. with selections of classical and popular show tunes for this family friendly event. This year’s theme is “Timeless Favorites: from Broadway to the Big Screen” and features selections from “The Sound of Music,” “Star Wars” and “My Fair Lady” just to name a few.

Open to the public, this free performance is made possible through the efforts of the Savannah Arts Commission, the City of Savannah and donations from local businesses and individuals supporting the arts.

Attendees should bring lawn chairs or blankets and gather on the lawn of the mansion near the platform stage. In case of inclement weather, the concert will move indoors to the Hardin County High School auditorium on Pickwick Road in Savannah.

The Germantown Symphony Orchestra is a volunteer, self-governing, and community-based orchestra a membership of over 80 musicians - a diverse group including students, teachers, professional musicians, professionals in other fields, and retirees.
