Hardin County fun, fireworks and the Fourth of July

Locals and visitors alike will have plenty to do during the upcoming holiday weekend.

The Fourth of July weekend would not be complete without fireworks. Hardin County’s show is on the Tennessee River in Saltillo on Monday, July 4, starting at dark, weather permitting.

Due to scheduling conflicts and supply issues, there will be no fireworks that were originally scheduled for Sunday, July 3, at Grand Harbor in Pickwick, organizers said.

Saltillo Mayor Larry Lowery said the city’s show is always fun and brings a lot visitors, but people should be prepared for a larger crowd this year.

“We were surprised that Pickwick will not be having a fireworks show, but we are going to do what we always do, just maybe with larger crowds this year,” Lowery said.

The mayor has requested assistance from Hardin County’s sheriff and fire department, as well as the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, to help with crowds in the city and the waterways.

Fireworks are just a part of the fun in the area this holiday weekend.

Banjos, singing, dancing and more are happening in downtown Savannah on Friday and Saturday, July 1-2, at the 44th annual Bluegrass Festival. It kicks off Friday at 6 p.m. at Wayne Jerrolds River Park and continues Saturday at noon at Savannah Market on Main Street.

Shiloh National Military Park will present Civil War cannon firing demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday.

There are also several other fireworks shows in the area. Boaters can travel on Pickwick Lake to Waterloo, Alabama, on Sunday for a fireworks show put on by VFW Post 6504. The city of Florence, Alabama is hosting an Independence Day celebration Monday at McFarland Park, 200 James M. Spain Dr. The event starts at 7 p.m. and fireworks lift off at 9 p.m.

Selmer City Park also has a fireworks display on the fourth, as part of the city’s Freedom Festival that includes live music, food vendors and more, starting at 7 p.m.
