HCFD to host family-friendly fire prevention, child safety event

The Hardin County Fire Department is hosting a community Fire Prevention Day this weekend.

The event includes demonstrations and information from the fire department’s K9 and special ops teams, and firefighters will also be on hand offering fire prevention tips.

A highlight of the event is a live fire demonstration.

“There will be a side-by-side fire demo burn to show the benefits of having a residential sprinkler system. The demonstration will show how much quicker a fire will be extinguished with a sprinkler system compared to a fire not having the advantage of assistance from a sprinkler system,” Hardin County Fire Chief Melvin Martin said.

Hardin County residents can also register for free smoke alarms, which Martin said are the first step to fire safety.

In addition to the fire safety and prevention activities, the event offers drive-through car seat safety checks, sponsored by Safe Kids West Tennessee. Tennessee Highway Patrol officers will check that car seats are properly installed and make any needed adjustments to help ensure a child’s safety while riding in a vehicle. Martin said there will also be assistance available to anyone who may be in need of a child car seat.

While fire prevention and safety is the goal of the event, there will also be plenty of family-friendly fun activities available.

Sparky the Fire Dog will be in attendance along with his bouncy house for kids. Face painting and free coloring books and hats will also be available.

Additionally, kids can wear their costumes and grab some sweets as there will also be a truck or treat.

“This weekend is our annual Fire Prevention Day and it is a chance for the public to come out and learn about fire safety and prevention, while also offering fun activities for families to enjoy,” Martin said.

It all takes place Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lowe’s parking lot in Savannah, 1895 Wayne Road.
