Alan Gaastra, 73, of Decatur, Alabama, formerly of Savannah, died Sunday, April 26.
He was born in Friesland, Wisconsin, the son of the late William and Bernice Minnie Heinz Gaastra. He was united in marriage to Frances R. Frank, who survives.
Mr. Gaastra worked for Kirsch Foundry for 16 years until he was forced to retire due to his disabilities. He was a member of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Decatur, Alabama and Savannah Lodge 102. He helped drive the Shriner’s van to get children to Shriner’s Hospitals.
He is survived by his wife, Frances R. Gaastra of Decatur, Alabama; children, David A. Gaastra of Atoka, Tennessee, Alisha B. Stanfield of Decatur, Alabama, Grace A. Gant of Selmer, Tennessee, Mathew P. Gaastra of Decatur, Alabama, Hannah R. Hutcheson of Savannah; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, June Page of Markesan, Wisconsin, Dorthy Holland of Racine, Wisconsin, and Clarice Hillstrom of Haymarket, Virginia; brother, William Gaastra Jr. of Randolph,Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held on Friday, May 1, at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Clyde Ledlow officiating. Burial followed in Wesley’s Chapel Church Cemetery at Savannah.
