Douglas Blount

Douglas Blount was born in Hardin County on March 20, 1922, to the late Arthur Morris and Lura Falls Blount. On June 29, 1946, he was united in marriage to Katie Sue Freeman.

Mr. Blount served his country in the United States Army, attached to the Air Force. He completed his basic training in Richmond, Va., and then was stationed in England for 3-1/2 years. He oversaw the building of runways in Germany for a short time. He lived in Hardin County all of his life and was a self-employed building contractor. He has built numerous buildings in the community.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Savannah where he served as a deacon and a longtime Sunday school teacher. He served on several boards, including the Public Utility Board and Equalization Board, served as mayor of Savannah in 1977, and also served as a city commissioner.

Mr. Blount departed this life on Friday, Feb. 8, at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 19 days.

In addition to his wife, Katie Sue Blount, he is survived by one son, Richard Douglas Blount and his wife, Vickie, and one daughter, Angela Jean House and her husband, Steve, all of Savannah; three grandchildren, Jason House of Baton Rouge, La., Diana House of Fremantle, Western Australia, and Jill Blount-Clark of Savannah; three brothers, Glen Blount, Delmas Blount and Ancil Blount and one sister, Geneva Rinks, all of Savannah.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Allie Jane Whitaker; four brothers, Arthur Morris Blount, Daniel Wayne Blount and infant brothers, Carl and Maxell Blount.

Services were held on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m., at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Michael Roach, Eric Jones officiating. Burial followed in the Savannah Cemetery at Savannah.
