Ilene Handley

Ilene Kyle Handley was born in Hardin County, on Jan. 18, 1922, the daughter of the late James Arch and Lula Massey Kyle.

On Nov. 8, 1952, she was united in marriage to Marvin H. Handley, who preceded his wife in death on July 16, 2003.

Ilene lived in Hammond, Ind. for 26 years where she worked in the special education program for Hammond City Schools from 1973 to 1983. She retired from Brown Shoe Company where she was a seamstress. Ilene was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church in Savannah, where she was a Sunday school teacher and was very active in choir and Hopewell Senior Saints. Ilene was an excellent cook, seamstress and homemaker. She cared for her handicapped child faithfully for 19 years.

She departed this life on Thursday, Aug. 16, in Savannah, at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 29 days.

Ilene is survived by her children, Sandra Handley Dowling and her husband Tim of Savannah, Judy Schlegel and Gail Kelsey; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Louise Parnell of Portage, Ind.; special sister -in-law, Patsy Gibbs and special brother-in-law, Rex Handley. Ilene is also survived by her special grandson, Jonathan Dowling.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by two children, Shelia Handley and Dennis Handley; three sisters, Edna Devore, Lillian Morton and Ruth Riley; and two brothers, Paul Kyle and Billy Kyle.

Services will be held on Monday, Aug. 20, at 1 p.m., at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Derek Westmoreland officiating. Burial followed in the White Sulphur Cemetery at Pickwick Dam.
