J.C. Whitaker

J.C. Whitaker, 85, of Michie, died Saturday, Aug. 14, in Michie.

He was born in Michie, the son of the late Claude and Mabel Howard Whitaker. He was united in marriage to Lois Fisher, who survives.

Mr. Whitaker retired as a maintenance planner for Tennessee River Pulp and Paper in Counce, where he served as president of the Labor Union. He was a member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church. He was in the United States Navy during World War II. He was stationed on the battleship U.S.S. West Virginia, and served in the Pacific Theatre. He helped to build the Lebanon United Methodist Church, and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for Lebanon Cemetery. He was skilled with his hands, and was certified as a carpenter, electrician and plumber.

Services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Lebanon United Mothodist Church in Michie, with Dr. Howard Thomas, George Reed officiating. Burial followed in the Lebanon Cemetery at Michie. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Selmer was in charge of Arrangements. Memorials may be made to Lebanon Cemetery Fund.

In addition to his wife Lois Whitaker of Michie, he is survived by four children: Eddie Whitaker of Lutts, Sue Dills of Michie, Jerry Whitaker of Athens, Ga., and Mike Whitaker of Dyersburg, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Lowell Whitaker of LaCenter, Ky.; a sister, Joyce Brown of Guys, Tenn.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Whitaker.
