Joe Harrell Walkup, of Pickwick Dam, departed this life on Sunday, May 26, at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 23 days.

He was born in Williamson County, Tennessee, on Oct. 3, 1935, the son of the late B.T. and Sue Harrell Walkup. On Feb.  18, 1989, he was united in marriage to Linda Gayle Blanton, who survives.

Joe was a veteran of the United States Naval Reserve and had worked for the State of Tennessee for 38 years as an environmental consultant with the Department of Environment and Conservation. He had lived in Hardin County since 1988 and was a member of Pickwick United Methodist Church and Pickwick Shrine Club. He enjoyed golfing, fishing with “The Good Ole Boys” from Pickwick Dam, following the Tennessee Vols, traveling, and taking his granddaughter to see national parks all over the country.

Joe is survived by his wife, Linda Blanton Walkup of Pickwick Dam; son, Eddie Joe Austin of Shiloh; grandchild, Jessica Marie Austin of Phoenix, Arizona; sisters, Audene Phillips and Susan Boney and husband Jerry, all of Murfreesboro; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas and George Walkup.

Services were held on Wednesday, May 29, at 3 p.m., at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Savannah with Ray Chandler officiating. Burial followed in White Sulphur Cemetery at Pickwick Dam.
