Mary Hughes (12-22-13) service 12-27-13

Mary Smith Hughes, age 84, of Camden, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 22 at Camden Healthcare. She was born Oct. 19, 1929, in Crump, to the late Giles Clay and Ella Love Smith.

Ms. Hughes was the co-owner of the Camden Gravel Company where she was heavily involved in the Tennessee Road Builders Association in addition to various political action committees throughout her life. She was an active volunteer with Boy and Girl Scouts of America, WMU, GAs, VBS, Training Union and the American Cancer Society. She also taught a Sunday School class for young married women for many years at First Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, David Louis (Gina) Hughes of Brentwood; a daughter, Anita Beth (Randy) French of Camden; a grandson, Evan ( Jennifer) French of Camden; and two granddaughters, Alex Hughes of Brentwood and Jenna (Lance) Patton of Camden; great-grandchildren, Harper French, Ben French and Kennedy Patton; two sisters, Dean Anderson of Columbia, S.C. and Wanda (Ancil) Austin of Bartlett; a brother-in-law, E.J. (Luzelle) Hughes of Adamsville; a sister-in-law, Camille Littlefield of Adamsville; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ovie Ralph Hughes, two brothers, Louie and Carl Smith; and three sisters, Frankie Pickens, Laverne House, and  Ouide Alene Smith.

Services were held Friday, Dec. 27 in Camden with Marshall Gupton and Mike Blankenship officiating. Burial followed at Camden City Cemetery.
