Raymond Brewington (1-11-19)

Raymond Henry Brewington was born on May 26, 1926, in Hardin County, the son of Randall Emsley and Eula Gertrude Long Brewington. He was born and raised in the Walnut Grove area and attended school there and in Savannah.

He died on Friday, Jan. 11, in Savannah, at the age of 92 years.

On Aug. 16, 1943, he married Geraldine Virginia Brewington. In 1944 Raymond was drafted into the United States Army and after basic training in Arkansas and advanced jungle training in Hawaii, he was assigned as an infantryman in the 96th Infantry Division, 383rd  Regiment and fought in the Battle of Okinawa. He was awarded two Bronze Stars for action in the battle and the Combat Infantry Badge. After the war ended with the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan, he was stationed in Manila, Philippines as a military police until return to civilian life in 1946. He was a Mason in Savannah.

Raymond was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine in 1995.

He is survived by sons, Ronney Raymond Brewington (Ginny), Danny Sherrill Brewington (Lucy), Rickie Wade Brewington (Kathy); and daughter, Jana Gayle Brewington Averett (Charles); nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
