Virginia Coon

Virginia Karen Coon, 73, of Savannah, died Wednesday, Oct. 5.

She was born in Warsaw, Ind., the daughter of the late William Paul (Bill) and Mary Alice McConnell Dill. She was united in marriage to James W. Jobe II, who preceded her in death. She married her second husband, George M. Coon, who also preceded her in death.

In her youth, Virginia was a member of the Wabash St. United Methodist Church in Wabash, Ind. While in Savannah, she would attend church at the HMC Health and Rehab when she was able. She was also a member of the Moose Lodge in Wabash, Ind. and held an office with them. Ms. Coon was retired but did several jobs in her lifetime: telephone operator for General Telephone in Wabash, Ind., which later became AT&T; sewed canvas tarps and medical wraps in Andrews, Ind.; restaurant manager for the Steer Inn in Silverlake, Ind.; seamstress (set sleeves) for Garan Manufacturing in Adamsville. In June of 2005, she became a resident of HMC Health and Rehab, where she would crochet to help with fundraisers, baby showers, for gifts, and to make a little money to purchase gifts for her family. During her stay at the nursing home she became the President of the Resident Council.

Services were held on Sunday, Oct. 9, at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Eric Jones officiating. Burial followed in the Mars Hill Cemetery at Adamsville.

She is survived by her children, Rebecca L. Purvis of Adamsville, Keith H. Dill of Maine, James W. Jobe III of Indiana and Sarah K. Short of Adamsville; stepchildren, Barbara Young of Rochester, N.Y., Trisha Smith, Rick Coon, Sheila Brown and Todd Allen, all of Indiana; 12 grandchildren, 15 step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 17 step-great-grandchildren; brother, Ted Dill of Wabash, Ind.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cara Lee Coon; stepson, Ronald Coon; two brothers, Max and Donald P. Dill; sister, Brenda D. Ward; one granddaughter.
