Wilbert Wilkerson

Wilbert "Wib" Wilkerson, 90, of Savannah, died Sunday, June 17.

He was the son of the late Harve and Maude Canady Wilkerson.

He grew up working on the family’s 500-acre farm, assisting in the planting, cultivating, and harvesting of the corn, cotton, hay, and potatoes. He would also tend to the poultry and livestock on the farm. In September 1942, Wilbert enlisted in the Army. This service took him overseas with the 825th Engineer Aviation Battalion to England, France and Germany over a period of 31 months. He received his honorable discharge on January 1946. He had worked for Wilkerson Logging and Baugus Saw Mill.

Services were held on Tuesday, June 19, at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah with Benny Taylor officiating. Burial followed in the Savannah Cemetery.

He is survived by his sister, Betty Lou Wilkerson Copeland of Savannah, along with several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Wilkerson; and siblings, Josie Franks, Daisy Austin, Carrie Hazel Perry, Sarah Margaret Haynes, Lura Mae Franks, Gilbert Wilkerson and James "Dude" Wilkerson.
