Delcie Sue Alexander Ballentine, 92, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, transitioned peacefully to heaven on the morning of Thursday, Oct. 5. She was exactly two months shy of her 93rd birthday and was being lovingly cared for in her home by her daughters and Hospice of Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Dee Alexander; sister, Nellie Hardin; brother-in-laws James Hardin and James “Peck” Blackwelder; and nephew Richard Alexander.

Sue attended Red Bank Baptist Church and when she stopped driving, she watched the televised services each week and enjoyed the music and sermons.

The legacy she leaves behind is one of love of her family and friends. Her passions were cooking, being a gracious host, sharing food with others, she spent many years sewing and creating beautiful clothes, shopping (mostly for her family), driving her yellow VW bug, catching up with family and friends over the phone, working in her yard, and lovingly caring for her pets. She had a tender heart for homeless animals, and she rescued many dogs and cats and in recent years was always saying that her cats are what kept her going.

Her courageous, determined, generous spirit will always be remembered and treasured by her family members who include her sister, Juanita Blackwelder; brother, Wayne Alexander (Cathy); three daughters, Steffi Ballentine (Brenda), Susan Ballentine and Mary Dee Kelly (Brian); grandchildren, Ross Kelly and Rachel Blackmon (Nick); great-granddaughter, Sylvia Rey Blackmon (who she was so excited to welcome on Aug. 27, and then she had the pleasure of holding her); niece, Karen Hardin; nephews Eddie Hardin, David Hardin (Kim), Donald Blackwelder (Debbie), Greg Blackwelder (Danette), Phillip Blackwelder (Christy), ZB Alexander (Jessica) and Nate Alexander (Sara Beth); and her beloved beautiful cats Big Mama, Good Girl, Piggy, Baby and Boy.

The family appreciates the services of the RNs, Social Worker, and other staff at Hospice of Chattanooga.

Following Sue’s wishes, she will be cremated, and her family will be having an intimate celebration of her life. If you would like to memorialize Sue, please consider making a donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, McKamey Animal Center, or your Charity of choice.
