Dr. J. T. Lassiter, 91, of Savannah, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 16. He was born on Oct. 4, 1932, in Corinth, Mississippi, the son of the late Holder Dolgier and Pardie Ophelia Harrison Lassiter.

On Dec. 10, 1960, he was united in marriage to Mary Virginia Cromwell, who survives.

Dr. Lassiter graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic and went on to own and operate his own clinic from 1958 until his retirement in 2003. He was a member of the Tennessee Chiropractic Association where he received the Heritage Award in 1998 and was a convention honoree in 2004. He was also a member of the Lion’s Club, Music Club, Bridge Club and First Baptist Church, where he also served as choir director.

During his youth, J. T. was a tennis player, lifeguard, and participated in different water sports. He was also a piano player and golfer. He enjoyed tending to his yard and even won “Yard of the Week,” several times. He traveled to many places during his life, including Alaska, Russia, Hungary, Luxembourg, Ireland and Jamaica.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Virginia Lassiter of Savannah; son, Jonathan Trellis Lassiter of Savannah; daughters, Joanna Katherine Pitts of Selmer, Caryn Rebecca Gaastra of Cullman, Alabama, Julie Lynn Walker of Memphis, Tennessee, and Laura Elaine Wells of Nashville, Tennessee; brothers, Donas Lassiter, Leon Lassiter and Bobby Lassiter; sisters, Geraldine Melvin, Joella Rhodes and Annette Lassiter; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild on the way.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Lassiter was preceded in death by his children, James Tod Lassiter and Miriam Pardie Garrison.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 21, at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Savannah, with Tony Polk officiating. Burial will follow at New Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in Savannah.
