Luther William Cary, 89, of Savannah, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 13. He was born on Aug. 1, 1933, in the Cerro Gordo Community of Savannah, the son of the late Luther Harrison and Helen Lela-Mae Davis Cary.

On July 2, 1955, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Jean Byram Cary, who preceded her husband in death on Jan. 20, 2018.

Mr. Cary honorably served his country in the United States Navy. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with his Teachers Degree and went on to work for Hardin County Schools teaching sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

He also owned several businesses; Cary’s Antiques, Cary’s Fireworks, Cary’s (Fishing Tackle) Inc., and Adam’s Bait Shop. He retired from Crounse Corporation after 36 years where he was a Chief Engineer.

He attended East End Methodist Church in Savannah. He was very proud of his family and was a good father, husband, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. He lived for his family and God. His family described him as a good provider and a simple, loyal man who lived by his word. He never spoke a harmful word against anyone. He was a faithful fan of the Tennessee Vols and Atlanta Braves.

He is survived by his son, William Allen Cary of Savannah; daughter, Jeanette Carol Cary Climer Pruitt of Savannah; sister, Flora Mae Delaney; grandchildren, William Bryan-Christopher Cary, Winstin Carly Ford, Michael Tanner Pruitt, Roger Byram Cary and Elizabeth Paige Bennett; and great-grandchildren, Hunter Axel Ryu Cary, Archer Jayen Creed Cary, Roxas Ren Rain Cary, Karson Conleay, Lawson Burton, Kaki Burton, Kaki Burton and Nola Bennett.

In addition to his parents and wife, Luther was preceded in death by an infant son, Brian Cary.

Services were held on Saturday, Dec.17, at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Savannah, with David Baker officiating.
