Madge Atkinson Newsom, 76, of McNairy County, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Savannah. She was born April 10, 1946 in McNairy County, the daughter of the late J.T. and Nellie Louise Hodge Atkinson.

She was united in marriage to William Preston Newsom on July 16, 1966, who preceded her in death on June 14, 1998.

Mrs. Newsom had a successful career in Mortgage Banking industry in Northeast Louisiana before retiring and returning to Tennessee. She spent her retirement years enjoying time with family and friends, traveling, gardening, quilting and giving to others. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Counce.

She is survived by a son, Rodney Newsom and wife Beth of West Monroe, Louisiana; three grandchildren, Avery Newsom of Los Angeles, California, Seth Berry and wife Alyssa of Houston, Texas, David Hassell of New Orleans, Louisiana; a great-grandson, Henry Berry; five sisters, Mary Ann Luker and husband James of Mobile, Alabama, Joyce Darlene Hamm and husband Jim of Collierville, Tennessee, Rachel King of Selmer, Janie Taylor of Selmer, Freda Smith and husband Kevin of Adamsville; two brothers, T.L. Atkinson of Selmer, Rex Atkinson of Selmer; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Tunnie Joe and Grover Atkinson; and sister, Dorene Atkinson.

Services were held on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, with Jimmie McChristial officiating. Burial followed at Wyatt Cemetery in Hornsby, Tennessee.
