Marie Mallette Hurst, 62, of Selmer, passed away on Friday, Oct. 6, in Nashville. She was born Sept. 5, 1961, in Savannah, the daughter of the late Jack C Mallette and Betty Spradlin Mallette.

Marie was a zealous advocate for the care of children. She served as a social worker for the Departments of Human and Children’s Services for a combined total of 31 years. She served on the board for the Carl Perkins Center of Selmer for many years. She also served at First Baptist Church of Selmer as the Children’s Choir Director, Sunday School Teacher, Wednesday night Small Group Leader, Women’s Ministry Leader, and any other role that needed to be filled. Although she had many, her favorite was the role of “Mimi” for her grandchildren.

The impact Marie had on her family, friends, church, community, and anyone who met her cannot be captured in words. Although she is no longer with us, all who knew her will carry her with us through her words of wisdom, wit, generosity, kindness, and faithfulness. If you had a friend in Marie, you had something special — something irreplaceable.

She is survived by her husband, Terry Hurst of Selmer; two children, Andy Wilson and wife Megan of Memphis, Tennessee, and Addie Brown and husband Eric of Selmer; stepson, Scott Hurst of Selmer; seven grandchildren, Spencer Hurst, Abby Cate Brown, Wade Brown, Andi Brown, Lincoln Lunsford, Jack Lunsford, and Anne Marie Lunsford; siblings: Dan Mallette and wife Diane of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Ramona Wilkerson and husband Ronnie of Savannah, Don Mallette and wife Denise of Jackson, Tennessee, Karl Mallette of Savannah; sisters-in-law, Laura Spadlin of Savannah, Nancy Henson of Hernado, Mississippi; special friend, Janet Mallette; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Mack Spradlin; son-in-law, Jacob Lunsford; and mother-in-law, Ethel Hurst.
