Mildred Churchwell, 87, of Adamsville, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 12, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on Aug. 21, 1935 in Hardin County, the daughter of the late Aubrey Johnson and Ada Alma Cromwell Gant.

On Dec. 12, 1951, she was united in marriage to James Oscar “Jimmy” Churchwell, who preceded his wife in death on May 10, 2021.

Mrs. Churchwell was a member of Crump United Methodist Church in Crump. She was employed by garment factories all of her working life, including Garan and Tennessee River Manufacturing. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and quilting. She loved children and enjoyed raising pumpkins for children to come and pick up in the field. She also loved animals and enjoyed tending to the ducks, chickens, rabbits and calves.

Mildred Nadean Gant Churchwell was loved by anyone she encountered. Anyone that she met could always count on the same consistent bubbly personality, quick-witted humor, generous spirit, and fierce determination for anything involving the ones she loved. She was feisty yet nurturing and always had space in her heart for an animal or person in need. At any given time, you could walk into her home expecting a warm meal and some great laughs by just observing her and Jimmy’s conversations. He never held back picking at her and she never missed an opportunity to set him straight. The love they shared was just one of the many areas of life that she poured her all into. Her son, Tracy, was the absolute light of her life. He hung the moon in her eyes and they had a relationship that only a mother and son would understand. She was the picture perfect wife, Mama, Mother-in-law, Granny, sister and friend. No matter how much time passes, the infectious and energizing laugh of granny will always be heard with every single passing thought.

She is survived by her son, James Tracy Churchwell and his wife Lisa Ann of Crump; sister, Naomi Feathers of Crump; brothers, Jamie Forrest Gant and his wife Marie of Crump, and Joe Gant and his wife Betty of Waycross, Georgia; grandchildren, Graham Churchwell and his wife Elizabeth, Elisabeth Napier and her husband Sam, Megan Rasmussen and her husband Tyler and Kyle Smith and his wife Ginny; and great-grandchildren, Liam Napier, Jack Napier, Noah Rasmussen, Elliegh Rasmussen and Cooper Churchwell, due in April 2023.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mildred was preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Gant; and granddaughter, Alyssa Churchwell.

Services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Savannah, with Jamie Sprayberry and A. J. Fowler officiating. Burial will follow at Crump Cemetery in Crump.
