Velma Ruth Holt, 81, of Morris Chapel, passed away on Sunday, June 30. She was the third of eight children born to the late Clifford and Sammie Eanes Holt on Sunday, May 10, 1942 in Morris Chapel, Tennessee.

Ms. Holt graduated from Dunbar High School. After graduation, Velma attended Tennessee State University in Nashville, and Jackson State Community College in Jackson, Tennessee.

She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age at New Zeal Missionary Baptist Church. A lifelong member of New Zeal Missionary Baptist Church, she served as choir president and the church’s recording secretary until God called her home to rest. Velma was an active member of the Tennessee River Missionary Baptist District Association where she served as Missionary President.

She spent a lifetime training and developing many in Hardin County through the Workforce Investment Act as a Career Specialist. Before retiring in 2019, Velma helped a multitude in her community through her many social programs. Her many social programs included programs for youth, dislocated workers and jobs and career training. She touched countless lives through her service to her community.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Sammie Holt; one sister, Demetric Diane Holt; and Richard (Ricky) Holt (Annie).

She leaves to cherish her life and memories two children, Darryl (Andriae) Holt of Montgomery Village, Maryland and Rita and devoted son-in-law, Bobby Price of Morris Chapel; four grandchildren, Samantha Holt of Germantown, Maryland, Kadeshia Price of Morris Chapel, Kienna (Hunter) Burkeens of Florence, Alabama, and Alyssa Holt of Montgomery Village, Maryland; three sisters, Wilma Hodo of Kensington, Maryland, Margie Tall of Morris Chapel; and Sylvia (Kenneth) Neighbors of Gilroy, California; two brothers, Floyd (Lillian) Holt of Bowie, Maryland and Charles (Donald Wilson) Holt, of Portland, Oregon. She will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, special neighbors and friends.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, August 4, at 10 a.m., at New Zeal Missionary Baptist Church in Morris Chapel.
